Estimation Through Takeoff Software

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Computers are changing the way that we all do business. That should be obvious to anyone who’s looked at recent developments in the world of technology. If you are involved in the world of construction, then you should be up-to-date with the latest in takeoff software.

The basics of the program are just amazing. You can just do your designs through the software and it will make a professional blueprint from your information. Then you just have to change the little menus to make it better. You can shift the display to show different rooms or even build up material lists. These are some of the more complex ideas though. Just think about how nice it would be to calculate square feet when you are planning a job. Just type in the number and you’ll be able to have detailed and running estimations of all the little projects.

It’s obvious that you shouldn’t buy the software just to do square feet estimate programs. You can still do those through basic calculator functions. The idea is that they are just a small part of a much bigger program. If you can do these estimates that quickly, then think of all the other things that you can do.

Videogame sales shine despite economic gloom: report

Monday, December 15th, 2008

US videogame sales were a bright spot on November’s bleak economic landscape, climbing to nearly three billion dollars, according to market research firm NPD Thursday.

Videogame sales so far in 2008 topped 16 billion dollars at the end of November and are on pace to crest 22 billion dollars for all of 2008, according to the industry tracking group.

Sales in November were 10 percent higher than the same month last year, before a financial storm slammed the economy.

“The video games industry continues to set a blistering sales pace,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier said, citing research that showed videogames were “the category consumers are least likely to cut back on this holiday.”

Videogame sales are up 31 percent for the year, driven by demand for titles such as “Gears of War 2” and “Call of Duty: World at War,” according to NPD.

Videogames crafted for Nintendo’s coveted Wii consoles made up half the top 10 best selling titles.

Wii sales in November were more than double those of Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles and more than five times those of Sony’s PlayStation 3 systems.

Still, each of the rival videogame console makers “had something to brag about” in the robust sales figures, Frazier said.

Videogame sales are being bolstered by an industry trend of expanding the audience beyond “hardcore gamers” by designing offerings for families, girls, seniors, and others aside from young-male fans of shooter titles.

“Economic factors are also at play given that a video game is a relatively inexpensive form of entertainment for the hours of value it provides,” said Frazier.

A freshly released “Fallout 3″ videogame from Bethesda Softworks lets people immerse themselves in the roles of heroes or outlaws in a vivid post-apocalyptic Washington for scores of hours.

At a price of 60 dollars for a copy of the videogame, the cost breaks down to less than a dollar an hour for entertainment as compared with five or so dollars an hour to go to a film.

“It’s clear there can be more multiple victors this generation (of consoles),” Frazier said.

“While price is certainly a strong factor, particularly as the current economic situation continues to prevail, the most important factor that will drive success in 2009 will be the line-up of compelling games that will keep consumers involved in the industry.”

Scientists identify brain enzyme that regulates appetite and weight gain

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Overactivity of a brain enzyme, called p70 S6 Kinase 1, or S6K, may play a role in preventing weight gain and obesity, said researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

For the study, scientists focussed on the hypothalamus in the brain, which controls body temperature, hunger, and thirst. Specialized nerve cells in the hypothalamus sense whether the body contains adequate amounts of nutrients and stored body fat. The cells then send out signals telling other parts of the brain to adjust food intake, metabolic rates, and physical activity accordingly — keeping the body’s caloric intake in balance with calories burned.

Thus, in order to delve in detail into the nutrient-sensing pathways and how they go awry in metabolic disorders, the researchers focused on an enzyme called p70 S6 Kinase 1, or S6K, which plays a role in regulating the growth and proliferation of all cells, including nerve cells.

“It turns out that this enzyme, and the pathway it regulates, is nutrient sensitive — that is, S6K activity increases in the presence of carbohydrates and protein. This led us to believe that S6K might not only be involved in maintaining the structure and function of individual cells, but also in regulating the energy balance of the whole body,” said the study’s principal investigator, Gary J Schwartz, Ph.D., professor of medicine and neuroscience at Einstein.

To test their hypothesis, the researchers injected rats with special viruses that selectively raise or lower S6K activity. They injected the viruses directly into the lower-middle, or mediobasal, portion of the hypothalamus, an area rich in nutrient-sensing nerve cells.

“When we raised the activity of the enzyme, we saw reductions in food intake, in body weight, and in production of peptides [small chains of amino acids] that normally stimulate feeding. When we lowered S6K activity, we saw essentially the opposite response,” said Dr Schwartz.

Schwartz said that it was important how increased S6K activity reduced the rats” food intake by reducing the average size of meals rather than changing the number of meals over the course of a day.

Thus, the animals apparently were sated faster and therefore ate less at every meal.

In another experiment, the researchers tested whether increased S6K activity would protect against the natural tendency of mammals on a high-fat diet to overeat.

When animals on a high-fat diet were given the S6K-enhancing virus, they overate less and gained weight more slowly than control animals, the researchers report. In addition, the virus-enhanced animals had lower body-fat levels and better glucose tolerance than the control group.

On the whole, the study shows that S6K acts as a kind of food-sensing thermostat in mammals, increasing or decreasing feeding behaviour and metabolism to maintain a normal energy balance.

“These findings show that it may be possible to control obesity and other human metabolic disorders by developing drugs that regulate S6K activity,” said Schwartz.

The findings were reported in Cell Metabolism.

Vatican issues major new bioethics document

Friday, December 12th, 2008

The Vatican raised its opposition to embryonic stem cell research, the morning-after pill, in vitro fertilization and human cloning to a new level Friday in a major new document on bioethics.

But in the document, the Vatican also said it approved of some forms of gene therapy and encouraged stem cell research using adult cells. And it said parents could in good conscience inoculate their children with vaccines produced with cells derived from aborted fetuses.

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued “The Dignity of a Person” to answer bioethical questions that have emerged in the two decades since its last such document was published.

With it, the Vatican has essentially confirmed in a single, authoritative instruction the opinions of the Pontifical Academy for Life, a Vatican advisory body that has debated these issues for years.

The Vatican’s overall position is formed by its belief that human life begins at conception, and must be afforded all the consequent respect and dignity from that moment on. The Vatican also holds that human life should be created through intercourse between husband and wife, not in a petri dish.

As a result, the Vatican said it opposed the morning-after pill, even if it doesn’t cause an abortion, because an abortion was “intended.” In the use of drugs such as RU-486, which causes the elimination of the embryo once it is implanted, the “sin of abortion” is committed; their use is thus “gravely immoral.”

The Vatican also said it opposed in vitro fertilization because it involves separating conception from the “conjugal act” and often results in the destruction of embryos. The Vatican supports, however, techniques that help couples overcome obstacles to getting pregnant.

In the document, the Vatican elaborated on a host of issues surrounding assisted fertility, saying it:

_Opposed the selective reduction of embryos often used in in vitro procedures since it essentially is abortion.

_Opposed pre-implantation diagnosis of embryos since it may be followed by the destruction of those embryos deemed defective or otherwise undesirable.

_Opposed freezing embryos, since it is “incompatible with the respect owed to human embryos” and also means they were created in vitro.

It said that, while freezing eggs is not in itself immoral, it becomes unacceptable when it occurs for the sake of artificial procreation.

The Vatican lauded as “praiseworthy” the suggestion by some to let infertile couples “adopt” the thousands of frozen embryos that have been produced in vitro over the years. But it said such adoptions present a host of medical, psychological and legal problems.

The instruction also weighed in on research involving stem cells, cloning and gene therapy.

The Vatican stressed that it fully supported research involving adult stem cells. But it said obtaining stem cells from a living embryo, even for the sake of effective therapies, was “gravely illicit.”

It said gene therapy on regular cells in the body other than reproductive ones was in principle morally licit since it sought to “restore the normal genetic configuration of the patient or to counter damage caused by genetic anomalies.”

But it said that cell therapy which seeks to correct genetic defects with the aim of transmitting the therapy onto offspring was more problematic.

“Because the risks connected to any genetic manipulation are considerable and as yet not fully controllable, in the present state of research, it is not morally permissible to act in a way that may cause harm to the resulting progeny,” the document said.

In the document, the Vatican also:

_Repeated its opposition to human cloning for both medical therapies and reproduction. Such techniques could result in an individual being subjected to a form of “biological slavery from which it would be difficult to free himself.”

_Said parents could in good conscience use a vaccine for their children that was developed using cell lines from an “illicit origin.” Religious groups in the United States have pressed the Vatican to issue a statement concerning the morality of using vaccines developed using cell lines derived from aborted fetuses.

“Grave reasons may be morally proportionate to justify the use of such ‘biological material,’” the instruction said, adding that the parents would have to make known their disagreement with the way the vaccines were developed and press for alternatives.

But the document was very strong in stressing that researchers using such material were in a different position and had a greater degree of responsibility. It said they had a moral duty to remove themselves from the “evil aspects” of the original, illicit act — even if they and their institutions had nothing to do with it.

Why being stressed about math can lead to poor grades

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

For most students, thinking about the next day’’s math exam makes them so anxious that they face difficulties while solving arithmetic problems. Now, a new study has explored why the stress related to the ”dreaded” subject leads to poor performance in tests.

The study has been conducted by University of Chicago psychologist Sian L. Beilock and her colleagues.

Much Beilock’’s her work suggests that working memory is a key component of math anxiety. Working memory (also known as short term memory), helps to maintain a limited amount of information at one time, just what is necessary to solve the problem at hand.

Beilock’’s findings suggest that worrying about a situation (such as solving an arithmetic problem in front of a group of people) takes up the working memory that is available for figuring out the math problem.

The type of working memory involved in solving math problems may be affected by the way the problems are presented. When arithmetic problems are written horizontally, more working memory resources related to language are used (solvers usually maintain problem steps by repeating them in their head).

However, when problems are written vertically, visuo-spatial (or where things are located) resources of working memory are used. Individuals who solve vertical problems tend to solve them in a way similar to how they solve problems on paper.

Beilock wanted to know if stereotype-induced stress (i.e. reminding women of the stereotype that “girls can”t do math”) would result in different results for solving vertical versus horizontal math problems.

The findings showed that the women who had been exposed to the negative stereotype performed poorly, although only on the horizontal problems (which rely on verbal working memory).

Beilock suggests that the stereotype creates an inner monologue of worries, which relies heavily on verbal working memory. Thus, there is insufficient verbal working memory available to solve the horizontal math problems.

It has generally been shown that the more working memory capacity a person has, the better their performance on academic tasks such as problem solving and reasoning.

In order to explore this further, Beilock and her colleagues compared math test scores in individuals who had higher levels of working memory with those who had less.

The subjects took a math test either in a high-pressure situation or low pressure situation. It turns out that the subjects with higher working memory levels performed very poorly during the high pressure testing situation-that is, the subjects with the greatest capacity for success were the most likely to “choke under pressure”.

Beilock surmises that individuals with higher levels of working memory have superior memory and computational capacity, which they use on a regular basis to excel in the classroom.

“However, if these resources are compromised, for example, by worries about the situation and its consequences, high working memory individuals” advantage disappears,” Beilock said.

The new study is published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Cisco launches new video initiative

Monday, December 8th, 2008

The online video revolution has begun, and Cisco Systems says it has designed a new strategy complete with new products to help its customers meet the demand.

On Monday, the company, which makes devices that shuttle traffic around the Internet, will announce a new architecture and strategy to help its customers better handle video traffic on their network. CEO John Chambers will be pushing the new architecture and initiative at the company’s annual C-Scape press and analyst conference in San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday.

It’s no secret that Cisco thinks that video is a big deal. The company spent $6.9 billion to buy Scientific Atlanta three years ago. And it’s made other important video acquisitions, such as the purchase of Arroyo in 2006, which developed technology for improving video-on-demand. Also in 2006, it rolled out its telepresence product that uses high-definition video to allow corporate customers to re-create a virtual boardroom to meet with colleagues and customers over a video conference.

But now the company says it will help its customers build what it calls “MediaNets” or networks built specifically for video. Along with a new architecture, the company is introducing new products that will eliminate buffering delays and pixilation issues for video traffic traveling over an IP network.

“We believe there is an opportunity to add a set of new technologies and new devices to the network that are specifically designed for video,” said David Hsieh, marketing vice president for Cisco’s emerging technologies group. “Video is becoming the dominant source of traffic on networks. And we believe there is a huge opportunity to add new capabilities to make networks optimized for video.”

This message will be an easy sell to its service provider customers who are already seeing huge demand in bandwidth from video traffic as people watch video from sites like Hulu.com or YouTube. And as phone companies and cable operators deliver more high-definition video programming of their own over IP networks, they will need even more help managing their networks to make sure they are efficiently using bandwidth. Experts predict that more than 4 billion video streams per month will be delivered through Internet-enabled set-top boxes by 2012.

New products, such as Cisco’s ASR 9000 edge router, which is part of the MediaNet architecture, could help these customers better manage their networks to accommodate this surge in video traffic.

But the video push could be a tougher sell for the Cisco’s core corporate customers, which so far haven’t been big users of video. What’s more, companies are already cutting back on their IT spending, and some may not see adding video as a top priority.

“One of the biggest challenges that Cisco faces is making companies realize how video can transform their businesses, ” said Zeus Kerravala, a vice president at the Yankee Group. “Cisco needs to sell video to its corporate customers as an important collaboration tool that will change how they interact internally as well as with their the customers and partners.”

Indeed, that is what Cisco is trying to do with the MediaNet initiative. CEO John Chambers has already been touting the company’s high-end telepresence product as an alternative to face-to-face meetings with clients and partners. The idea is that companies can reduce their costs and improve productivity by meeting virtually instead of flying around the country or around the world. Cisco plans to take this idea down to the desktop level too.

The first product in the new portfolio of products is called the Cisco Media Experience Engine 3000. It’s a hardware appliance intended to ensure that video can be delivered to any device on the network. The box, which sits in the corporate network, is intelligent enough to transcode video so that it can be played on any device, such as a digital sign, PC, or mobile handset.

If Cisco succeeds in convincing its corporate customers to jump on the video bandwagon, the company will not only be making additional revenue from a new set of products, but it will also drive demand for its traditional products, such as routers and switches.

“Video chews up a lot of bandwidth,” Kerravala said. “So adding video to a network can drive a whole new upgrade cycle, and that means more business for Cisco.”
