Garmin GPSs

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

With the credit crunch I have started to become a lot more careful with what I am spending my money on. I have decided that I need to get a new garmin but deciding on which one is pretty tricky. I do not want to spend an unnecessary amount of money but I do want one that I will not have to replace very quickly. I lost my Garmin 96 and so if I am likely to lose the next one I buy then it would make sense to go for a cheaper model. However, if I do not lose it, which is likely as I do not often lose things, then it might be better to get one with more features.

This would mean that I would not need to upgrade it so quickly. Something like the Garmin 496 could be good as I think it looks cool as well as having great features. However, there are others which I think probably give better value for money and so I have also been considering the Garmin 296 as well. It is a tricky decision and I expect it will take me several more days research before I make up my mind.

Sound Barriers for Noise Pollution

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Noise pollution affects the sound system of the human body and damages the important tissues of brain. Tall buildings built with HVAC systems and rooftops are main sources of noise pollution. These HVAC systems use heavy chillers and boilers, which produce high frequency sound. Such sounds have serious impact on the human brain and they should be stopped by using some barrier system. Sound barrier systems act as good alternative for reducing the noise level. These sound barrier walls are also called as sound enclosures. They are entirely different from traditional sound barriers. These sound barriers have the ability to reduce noise generated by outlets of chimneys and boilers.

In olden days, reflective products like concrete and bricks were used for reducing noise, but they were not too effective. These reflective products were able to redirect the sound, but were not able to absorb it. Today, the latest HVAC enclosures have the ability to absorb high frequency sounds and reflect back the low frequency sounds. These absorbing sound enclosures are able to minimize risk of unintentional sounds and maintain the effectiveness of the barrier. These HVAC barrier systems are light weight and have modular design. They are non corrosive, as well as non conductive, and are graffiti resistant.

The potentially used rangefinder Cameras are smart cameras that let you judge the distance between you and the subject, so that you can capture clear photographs of the subjects that are in exact focus of the camera. The latest Digital rangefinder cameras came into being in 2004 with the coming of e Epson R-D1. The cameras though expensive offer plenty of options to choose from. A Digital rangefinder is a good move from the film based rangefinders and with more hi-tech lens functions you can take the photographs from an exact distance and precision.

Sony seeks to harmonize music, electronics

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Now that Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG have broken off their troubled relationship, known as Sony BMG, the Japanese company hopes to harmonize its consumer electronics and its music, a duo that was badly out of sync.

The music business combination four years ago made Sony BMG the world’s No. 2 record label, generating savings and pre-empting other industry consolidation. But the venture’s cost-cutting didn’t keep pace with falling CD sales, and the two companies’ digital strategies didn’t jibe.

So they called it quits, and Sony bought out its partner for $900 million in a deal that closed Oct. 1.

Selling its 50 percent stake will let Bertelsmann refocus on its growing TV, magazines and book publishing businesses. And full ownership of the music venture gives Sony control of a medium it can use to drive electronics sales, just as it is using wholly owned Sony Pictures to help sell the Bravia line of TVs. The new company is called Sony Music Entertainment Inc.

“It’s nice to see Sony at least trying to line up some of their content efforts with their hardware,” said Michael Gartenberg, vice president of global strategy for Jupiter Media. “Up until now, the left hand never seemed to know what the right hand was doing.”

The music venture was so dissonant, it often helped Sony competitors.

In one case, Bertelsmann insisted the venture shop music videos to Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 instead of Sony’s PlayStation 3 gaming unit “to make sure it’s a fair deal” for Bertelsmann, said a Sony executive who asked not to be identified because those negotiations were private.

As a result, PlayStation 3 customers have to do without music videos from Sony BMG.

In another case, Sony BMG was the last major record label to join the PlayNow Arena online music store from Sony Ericsson — Sony’s own mobile phone venture. PlayNow launched in August in Scandinavia.

“(Sony BMG) has been by far the toughest agreement to get in place,” said Victor Fredell, Sony Ericsson’s content acquisition manager of music.

Fredell blamed the 50-50 ownership of Sony BMG, which meant neither company had a clear upper hand.

“They were just different in their approach to the business,” said Jay Cooper, a music attorney who represents Sheryl Crow and other artists. “I think they managed to put together a strong company but unfortunately they had two different kinds of philosophies.”

In contrast, Sony easily made “Hancock” from Sony Pictures available via the Internet for Bravia TVs for just $9.99 before the DVD release. The idea is that such exclusive offers — this one includes a Blu-ray disc — will boost sales of Bravias and the $299.99 Internet modules made by Sony Electronics.

Sony already this month has moved to streamline the music group, merging two labels that had been run separately by Bertelsmann and Sony.

Next, the Sony executive said, will be a push to better integrate Sony music with Sony Ericsson mobile phones, which had a paltry 8 percent market share in the second quarter.

Even Apple Inc. has yet to perfect the mobile phone music business: Its iPhones can’t directly download iTunes music, for instance.

“This is their opportunity to find some way to challenge Apple in a space that they don’t completely own yet,” said Jupiter’s Gartenberg.

Whether Sony can succeed is an open question.

Next Thursday, Nokia Corp. launches its much heralded “Comes With Music” venture in Britain, a service for which a year of free downloads comes with the purchase of a phone. Prepaid models start at about $229.

Whether any mobile music offerings gain traction depends a great deal on fickle consumer tastes — for Nokia’s all-you-can-eat system, or Sony’s and others’ pay-as-you-go regime.

“And then you have to assume that people want music on their phones,” said Russ Crupnick, a digital music analyst for NPD Group. “I think the jury’s still out on that.”

Last year, the entire music market — measured by album sales, or the number of tracks divided by 10 — shrank nearly 10 percent, and it is down about 5.4 percent so far this year. All the labels, including leader Universal Music Group, Sony, third-place Warner Music Group Corp. and EMI Group PLC, are making more music available cheaply on a wider array of platforms and devices, in the hopes digital downloads will push the needle the other way again.

And that digital strategy matters more for Sony than for most, since it is close to slipping to No. 3.

Its share of the U.S. music market is now 22.8 percent, down from 28.5 percent in 2004, according to Nielsen SoundScan, while Warner’s rose to 21.1 percent from 14.7 percent.

Does your life revolve around exploring what lies underneath the deep blue seas? If so, then you should also protect yourself from the dangers you may encounter with your underwater adventures. You can do that by using one of the most innovative gadgets that has helped a lot of people in the marine industry-a marine GPS system.

Marine GPS Systems are electronic tracking devices fishermen, divers, marine scientists and even the Marine Corps use to map out the terrains under the sea. Just like the regular GPS systems used to create digital maps and track people, animals and properties, marine GPS systems work as your map your way underneath the ocean.

These devices can also detect the presence of entities that may cause harm such as other underwater vessels or dangerous water animals like sharks. Because of the proven usefulness and innovation, these gadgets have become not only one of the best military tactical gear ever created, but have also been regarded as a breakthrough in the marine fishing industry since they can track where the big catch is located.

This marine gadget works best with Bushnell scopes. While you’re alerted of the coming dangers through the GPS system, you can also clearly see where and how those dangers are coming through these state-of-the-art scopes, thus you know what to do keep yourself safe.

Help selecting speakers?

ok so i tryin to decide wat speakers i should get and its driving me crazy. i’ve listened to the Mirage Nanosat Prestige, Definitive Technology ProCinema 60 at BB but each had its downsides i thought the Mirage sounded a bit hollow (we were listening to music), the OMNIPOLAR 360° sorda gave me a sense that i was there but it sorda felt like the sound was out of control (idk how to explain it), the Definitive Tech it didnt give me the same sense that i was there but it sounded great except for one thing… it crackled A LOT. how are the Klipschs and Orbs? any recommendations? The speakers will be used for music and movies. by the way i have a room 20′ x 14′ with a large opening to the kitchen on the left.

A large dilemma that’s ironically fun to decide…

First of all…NEVER LISTEN TO THE SALESMEN…JUST LISTEN TO THE SPEAKERS!..Follow this and everything else falls into place…Take some personal CDs with you and listen carefully to each possible selection…Hearing your favorite songs on different models will help you decide…

Mirages are great, but the high end seems hyped to me…I’d be wary of omni drivers as they always sound good in the listening room, but since my home (and many others) are not designed as a listening space, I fear the reflections would be horrendous…

Definitives crackle?..I bet it was part of the system and not the speakers…Definitive Technologies are good speakers, but never did anything for me…

Klipsch’s are nice, too…They have horns on the tweeters that sound smooth…Their floorstanding models have a pretty smooth sound overall…

Also check out B&W…They have an extensive line offering everything from bookshelf’s to high end esoteric models…These are nicer than the names you mentioned…

Don’t be afraid to also try listening to some recording studio grade speakers…The local music store (Guitar Center or Sam Ash) usually has a good selection and may even be better quality than what you find at Best Buy…

I have a set of Focal’s and a set of ProAc’s…I’d not part with either one..After what seems like the same battle you’re fighting, I decided to go with 5 identical speakers for the system…This creates a uniform sound for movies and surround music…Also gives me floorspace back form the large Electrostats I used to have…They sound great…

MICR Printer and Toner

Monday, July 7th, 2008

MICR (which can also be read as my-ker) means Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. The ANSI or American National Standards Institute has made a definition of MICR–this is the accepted machine language specification that is utilized in payment transactions (or bank checks) on paper.

Characters are printed with the use of a special MICR toner. This type of toner is made of a special chemical compound called iron oxide. Once printed, the characters are read by special high speed magnetic equipment. MICR printing requires a standard pattern or syntax which gives the bank the necessary details such as the account number, check number, routing number, and the amount of the check to be cashed.

MICR characters (which are printed with CMC-7 or E-13B font) need specific equipment and toners in order to become readable. MICR only becomes possible because of the magnetic toner that is used. Also, these characters have to follow a certain pattern in order to be analyzed by the reading machine. Aside from the reading machine, a check sorter is also utilized. There is no way that an ordinary bank crook would be able to decipher the MICR characters without using these equipments.

To be able to print the MICR characters, a special printer has also been made for this specific function. An MICR laser printer is made just for this purpose. Although the usual desktop printer could also be employed (as long as an MICR toner has been used), still, MICR laser printer works better.

This type of printer has to work hand-in-hand with a magnetically charged ink or toner to be able to function; and since this is equipment that is used in delicate bank transactions, it has to give out consistent quality of printing and the correct character placement throughout the entire surface of the printing area. Only then would the characters become readable to the electronic fingerprint-reading machine.

Since the introduction of such innovations, bank security has been taken to a higher level. Business processes are now highly efficient and users can now print their checks and pass security checks with just one reading. Such is the magic of technological advancement when applied to banking practices.
